On January 1, 2015, federal changes occurred regarding your HVAC system. The federal regulation for air conditioning systems changed from 13 SEER to 14 SEER, which means that any new air conditioning systems you purchase must be at least 14 SEER. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and it measures how efficient your unit is. The higher the rating, the more energy efficiency there is.
The SEER changes for air conditioning mostly affect the Southern and Southwestern states; in the Southwest, air conditioning units will also have to meet an Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) of 11.0 – 12.2. In Northeastern and Northwestern States, including Alaska, A/C units will stay at 13 SEER.
But how do these energy changes affect you?
Although the changes came into effect January 1, the new regulation allows air conditioning professionals and heating companies to sell any remaining inventory for 18 months.
The most noticeable impact of these changes will be the price increase. High-efficiency units cost more initially; however, within a few short years, the energy savings (both environmentally and economically) will be significant. As a homeowner, you have the right to know why you are paying a certain price for your product. Your Penguin Air, Plumbing & Electrical air conditioning professional will not only help you find the right unit for your home, but will also educate you on what is different between units. Not each A/C unit, furnace or heating pump provides the same level of comfort; the way your unit performs also depends on the size of your house, your comfort level, your rate of usage, how cold or warm it is outside and how old or new the system is. You should also be aware of how to make your A/C unit or heating system more efficient and how to save money; we are here to help you learn how to do this. Did you know, for instance, that if you currently use a 9 SEER A/C unit and you upgrade to a 14 SEER A/C unit, you can save up to 35% in electricity costs in one year? Your Penguin Air home professional can explain how this works, once you explain your current circumstances.
