New Year, New Cooling Energy Savings
So 2015 is here, and with it the worries, trials and joys of owning a home. Owning a home or business is full of stresses and rewards, from the satisfaction of owning something to the stress of taking care of little things about it. Most of the time, it’s not “fun” to take care of your home’s energy system. No one wants to spend countless dollars on repairs and no wants to experience the stress that comes with a broken air conditioning or heater. So how do you avoid these stresses in 2015? And how do you create energy savings for your home or business?
2015 Energy Savings
There are quite a few ways to save on your energy bill, at home or at work. Besides investing in energy efficient equipment, basic upkeep and maintenance by trained professionals can make a big difference in your energy bill. Why not start off the New Year with savings? It’ll be great to look back a year from now and see the changes you made come full circle. So how do you save on your home or business’s cooling and heating bills?
It starts with a few habit changes. To begin with, change your air filter at least once a month, or every 30 days. This ensures that dust, debris and all sorts of allergens are kept out of your air system and out of your lungs. When your filters haven’t been changed, your air conditioning suffers and doesn’t work as efficiently. It has to expend more energy by working harder.
Another easy habit change is to keep your inside doors open at all times. This allows air to move freely and cool all parts of your home. Many areas of your home, such as those in front of large windows or those that get the most of the afternoon sun, are hotter than other parts, and air conditioners have to work harder to cool these areas down. Create a general temperature in your home by allowing your cool air to flow freely and fill up rooms.
Air Conditioning Maintenance
Having a reputable air conditioning company perform routine A/C maintenance is where the real savings begin to show. An HVAC professional can inspect many things that are causing your air conditioning to work harder (and your bill to go up!), including leaky ducts, proper insulation and things around your home that can be causing cool air to escape. A professional will discuss these things with you, and can teach you what to do to make things efficient. Take a look at your window seals, for example. Unsealed windows allow a lot more air to escape than you may realize. Now, double-check those areas in your home that heat up quickly because of sun exposure. Perhaps invest in sunshades or screens that can drastically change the temperature in that area – and allow the A/C to work more efficiently in that spot, as well.
Have an A/C professional look at your dryer vents to ensure they are pushing hot air to the outside, not the inside. Have an HVAC technician look at where your A/C is located around your home. If an A/C unit is located far away from the areas of your home in which you spend the most time, it may be taking longer for cool air to reach that spot than necessary. A/C units must be left unblocked, as well. An A/C blocked by debris, furniture or foliage does not work as well as unobstructed units do.
An A/C technician can also look at how your ceiling fans are performing. Ceiling fans are made to support your cooling system and circulate air throughout your home. Ceiling fans with blades facing the wrong direction, for example, are not helping your air system in any way.
You want your home or business to be as comfortable as possible, and you want your energy bill to be manageable and smart. Many people don’t know the small ways their energy bills are skyrocketing, and it’s best to consult an air conditioning professional to find out how. There are a few steps you can take yourself to reduce energy waste, but annual air conditioning maintenance can truly make a difference in your energy savings.
